Biography

Joan M. Teno, M.D., M.S., FKC, is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Health Services, Policy and Practice. She is a health services researcher, a hospice medical director, and a board-certified internist with added qualifications in Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Teno has participated in numerous advisory panels for the Institute of Medicine, the World Health Organization, and the American Bar Association, and has served as a grant peer reviewer for the National Institutes of Health. Her research focuses on measuring and evaluating interventions to improve the quality of medical care for seriously ill and dying patients. Dr. Teno led the design of the Study to Understand Prognoses, Preferences, Outcomes, and Risks of Treatments (SUPPORT) intervention and has published over 330 articles in leading medical journals on topics related to palliative care, hospice services, and end-of-life decision-making. She has received notable awards for her contributions, including the AAHPM Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023 and an appointment as a College Fellow at King College London in 2024. Dr. Teno is also known for her work in identifying measurement tools for hospice care and enhancing pain management in nursing homes. She has developed and led quality improvement initiatives that have resulted in significant advancements in the care of vulnerable populations throughout her career.
