Biography

Joana Ozorio de Almeida Meroz is an Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. She coordinates the Design track of the Master’s program in Design Cultures. Joana completed her PhD thesis on Transnational Material Politics: Constructions of Dutch Design from 1970 to 2012, which was financed by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). She also holds an MPhil in Critical Studies in Art and Culture from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, an MDes in Contextual Design from Design Academy Eindhoven, and a BFA in Ceramics from Gerrit Rietveld Academy. Her research interests include the intersection of design history, environmental humanities, and public policy, focusing on how materials and artifacts are produced, collected, preserved, and displayed within transnational contexts. Joana has published articles in various journals including Journal Design History and Design Journal, and she has contributed to several academic chapters and exhibition catalogues. She is a guest co-editor for a special issue of Journal Design History on material culture in the Netherlands in the age of globalization and multiculturalism.
