Dr. Joann Stock

Biography

Joann M. Stock is a Professor in the Geological and Planetary Sciences Division at the California Institute of Technology. With an extensive academic background, she earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1981 and completed her Ph.D. in 1988. Her research focuses on plate tectonics, structural geology, and the evolution of plate boundaries, particularly in relation to stress and deformation in the lithosphere. Stock has been involved in significant ocean drilling projects, including serving as co-chief scientist on IODP Expedition 367 in the South China Sea. She is also influential in the field of geophysical field studies and has collaborated with Mexican scientists on geological studies related to ash layers and core-log-seismic integration. Stock teaches various courses, including introductory seminars on earthquakes and plate tectonics, where she emphasizes the geological and geophysical observations critical to understanding plate tectonic theory. Her teaching often includes practical elements, such as required field trips to faults and volcanoes in Southern California, to enable hands-on learning for students. Her work not only enhances scientific understanding but also endeavors to address natural hazards through improved forecasting and preparedness.
