Joanna Alexi has Cypriot heritage and was born and raised on Larrakia Country (Darwin), currently living and working on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja (Country). Joanna completed her PhD at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in the School of Psychological Science in 2020. Her PhD research focused on perceptions and distortions in young adults regarding body-image disturbances using psychophysical research methods. Following her PhD, she pursued her interest in culture and diversity as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Indigenous Studies at UWA. She contributes to Professor Pat Dudgeon's team on the Transforming Indigenous Mental Health and Wellbeing Project, which aims to develop a social-emotional wellbeing paradigm and emphasize the importance of Indigenous knowledges. Joanna is passionate about promoting health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a focus on strengths-based approaches. Furthermore, she has a keen interest in equity, diversity, and advocacy for wellbeing in systems change approaches to improve mental health, and utilizes mixed methods research for education and policy translation.
