Biography

Joanna Berzowska is the founder and research director of XS Labs, a design research studio focused on innovative fields such as electronic textiles and reactive garments that enable computationally mediated interactions between the individual and their environment. A core component of her research involves the development of enabling methods, materials, and technologies, particularly in the form of soft electronic circuits and composite fibers, exploring the expressive potential of soft reactive structures. She has lectured internationally on topics related to electronic textiles and their social, cultural, aesthetic, and political implications. Berzowska was selected for Maclean's Honour Roll for her contributions to technology and design, highlighting her role as Head of Electronic Textiles at OM signal, a Montreal startup that develops bio-sensing clothing. She holds a position as Associate Professor in Design Computation Arts at Concordia University.
