Biography

Joanna Burch-Brown is a Senior Lecturer and co-Director of Teaching for Philosophy at the University of Bristol. She has developed an innovative model of research and teaching aimed at empowering young people in Britain to address community concerns. Joanna has contributed to initiatives that encourage the city of Bristol to acknowledge its historical role in transatlantic slavery and engage with difficult histories. Her interests include bridging differing viewpoints while promoting understanding and positive intentions across communities. In June 2021, she began directing the Bristol Summer School, a city-wide educational initiative in collaboration with the Mayor's office. Joanna has expertise in transitional justice, intergroup attitudes, reducing prejudice, and environmental ethics, among other fields. She also directs a summer school focusing on arts, activism, and social justice. Furthermore, Joanna is a founding member of the University of Bristol's Centre for Black Humanities and has worked on projects related to contested heritage.
