Biography

Joanna Neilly is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, University of Oxford, where she specializes in German literature and culture of the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Her research interests focus on German Romanticism, literary reception, and the works of E.T.A. Hoffmann, exploring themes of myth, orientalism, and cultural transfer. She completed her PhD at the University of Edinburgh in 2013, which culminated in her book, 'E.T.A. Hoffmann's Orient: Romantic Aesthetics in the German Imagination', published in 2016. Neilly is currently engaged in a new research project on the influence of German Romanticism within the contemporary German literary landscape and co-edited a volume that examines the critical reception of German Romanticism in contemporary Latin America. She also teaches various literature courses and supervises graduate work focusing on topics related to Jewish portrayals and German-language travelogues. In addition to her academic contributions, Neilly has been involved in public engagement, including a multi-award-winning podcast series on Gustav Mahler, and regularly gives talks at prestigious venues including the Royal Opera House and BBC Radio 3.
