Biography

Professor Joanna Sofaer is a Professor of Archaeology and Co-Director at the Southampton Institute of Arts and Humanities. She leads the UKRI-funded project 'Pathways to Health Through Cultures of Neighbourhoods' and collaborates with Historic England and Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust on mental health and heritage-related initiatives. Her work explores the role of cultural community assets in promoting health and well-being, particularly by studying how young people use culture for self-care. With extensive experience in transdisciplinary and collaborative research, she actively engages with civic and regional partners across the arts, heritage, and creative industries. Throughout her career, Joanna has authored over 160 publications, including three monographs and five edited volumes, receiving recognition as a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and becoming a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 2013. She has been awarded the Phyllis Eileen Gibbs Travelling Research Fellowship from Newnham College, University of Cambridge. Professor Sofaer is also a member of the Governing Board of the European Consortium of Humanities Institutes and Centres (ECHIC).
