Joanna is a Lecturer in Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow. She holds a BA (Hons) and MRes in Geography from the University of Strathclyde, and an MSc in City Planning and Regeneration as well as a PhD in Public Health from the University of Glasgow. Her doctoral research focused on ‘Glasgow’s Spatial Arrangement of Deprivation Over Time’, utilizing various Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques to analyze the spatial development of deprivation in Glasgow, Liverpool, and Manchester from 1971 to 2011. This interdisciplinary study linked geography, public health, urban studies, planning, and ecology, particularly examining how spatial arrangements of deprivation influenced high mortality rates in Glasgow. In addition to her PhD, Joanna has been actively involved in research and teaching within Urban Studies, contributing to the ESRC funded REPAIR project, which studies adaptation processes in urban centers and innovations in real estate practices. As a part of the Urban Big Data Centre, her recent research has focused on suburbanization and poverty, harmonizing deprivation indices. Joanna is also a licentiate member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) in Scotland and a member of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society.
