Biography

Joanna Tucker is a lecturer in History at the University of Glasgow, focusing her research on 'scribe-centric' approaches to medieval manuscripts and texts. She earned her PhD at the University of Glasgow and has published extensively on the subject, including a book titled 'Reading and Shaping Medieval Cartularies: Multi-Scribe Manuscripts and Patterns of Growth', released by Boydell & Brewer in 2020. Joanna's current project, supported by an AHRC Research, Development & Engagement Fellowship, investigates scribal autonomy in multi-scribe manuscripts, specifically towards creating a digital edition of the 'Chronicle of Melrose Abbey', an essential source for Scottish history. Previously, she has been involved in several key research initiatives, such as acting as Co-Investigator on the AHRC/IRC-funded 'Digital Framework for Medieval Gaelic World' network, enhancing the understanding of medieval Irish and Scottish literature through digital resources. Joanna also served as Principal Investigator for a Royal Society Edinburgh-funded project on active manuscript curation, and she is co-director of the University of Glasgow's Textual Editing Lab, which fosters collaborative research among academics, archivists, and students in the field of textual editing. Her work addresses the challenges and innovations in the curation and research of medieval cartularies, contributing significantly to the digital humanities.
