Biography

Prof. Joanna Wong is an Assistant Professor and Associate Head of Graduate Studies in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary, where she has been a faculty member since July 2017. Her research focuses on developing cost-effective materials and manufacturing processes for specific engineering applications. Prof. Wong has explored a variety of topics including fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites for automotive applications, superhydrophobic coatings for water management, silica aerogels for building insulation, and ferroelectrets for sensors and actuators. She is currently investigating manufacturing methods such as additive manufacturing, pultrusion, filament winding, and stamp forming for fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites. Prior to joining the University of Calgary, she worked as a Senior Assistant at ETH Zurich, a Principal Scientist at a Boston-based startup, and as a Postdoctoral Researcher at EMPA in Dübendorf, Switzerland.
