Biography

Joanna Zhong has over 10 years of interdisciplinary education and professional experience focused on biomass-based renewable energy. She completed her PhD at the University of British Columbia in 2018 and holds master's and bachelor's degrees from Beijing University of Chemical Technology in China. After obtaining her doctorate, Joanna began her career at the Finnish energy company St1 in 2017, where she successfully applied her expertise in biomass bioconversion for industrial biofuels production. Following this role, she returned to UBC as a postdoctoral researcher, instructor, and educational manager in Bioeconomy Science Engineering. Before joining the University of Calgary, Joanna worked at Innovate Calgary, where she supported the transfer of laboratory technologies into market applications. Her current research explores the interactions between biomass, agriculture, and food systems, particularly focusing on biomass valorization in agricultural and energy applications. Her work aims to transform significant biomass residues into sustainable products, contributing to the advancement of a circular bioeconomy.
