Biography

Joanne Beckwith Maddock is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. She earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toledo in 2013, an M.S.E. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2017, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2021. Beckwith’s primary research focus is on undergraduate engineering education, particularly in sustainable workforce development. Current projects involve exploring the alignment of chemical engineering curricula with industrial workforce needs and the effectiveness of learning modules to enhance safety and design elements in laboratory courses. She is also involved in engineering education outreach, holding events for K-12 students and educators on campus, and serves as the lead for the REACT program, which focuses on engineering outreach in rural communities.
