Biography

Joanne Laycock is a Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Manchester. She completed her undergraduate degree in History and Archaeology at Durham University and later attained her MA in Modern European History. In 2005, she earned her AHRC funded PhD, which focused on Russian language studies at Glasgow University. She has held the Manoogian-Simone Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, concentrating on Armenian history. Prior to her current position, Laycock was a member of the History Department at Sheffield Hallam University for six years. Her research interests include the histories of refugees, migration, and humanitarianism in the modern world, particularly regarding Armenia and its diasporas. She examines the intersection of histories in Europe, the Middle East, and the Soviet Union, focusing on forced displacement and its long-term impacts. Laycock is currently involved in a Leverhulme Trust-funded project that investigates the mass displacement following the events from 1914 to 1928 in the South Caucasus. Moreover, she has published various works, including titles on the humanitarian intervention in Armenia and the complexities of memory concerning past conflicts and diasporas.
