Biography

Joanne Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal. She serves as the International President of Doctors Without Borders (MSF), becoming the first Quebecer to lead the organization since 2013. A pediatric emergency physician at CHU Sainte-Justine, Liu has been with MSF since 1996, working in various crisis regions including Somalia, the Republic of Congo, Honduras, Haiti, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Indonesia, Palestine, Uganda, Sudan, and Sri Lanka. A passionate advocate, she raises awareness about the catastrophic impacts of conflicts and has recently criticized the inhumane detention conditions faced by migrants and refugees in Libya. Liu has received numerous accolades, including the Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Action Award in 2013 and has been recognized as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in 2015. In 2018, she was honored as a Great Quebecer in the health section by the Quebec Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
