Biography

JoAnne Silbert-Flagg’s scholarship focuses on promoting breastfeeding throughout pregnancy, weaning, direct patient care, and educating health care professionals. She serves on the editorial review board for the Journal of Human Lactation and has edited the textbook Maternal Child Health Nursing (9th ed., 2023), where she authored five chapters on 'Nutritional Needs of Newborns'. Additionally, she co-edited the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certification Review Guide: Primary Care (2021), contributing a chapter on health promotion with expanded content on breastfeeding. Silbert-Flagg co-authored the NAPANP Position Paper Statement on Breastfeeding, published in the Journal of Pediatric Health Care. As past-chair of the Breastfeeding Expert Panel of the American Academy of Nursing, she also provides primary care as a pediatric nurse practitioner and is a certified lactation consultant. Silbert-Flagg developed and co-teaches online lactation courses approved by the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and has integrated lactation simulation experiences for students. She is the Associate Dean of Clinical Practice at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, affiliated with the Center for Equity in Child and Youth Health and Wellbeing.
