Biography

Joanne Turnbull is an Associate Professor in the School of Health Sciences and serves as the Director of Doctoral Programmes. Her primary research interests lie in understanding how patients access health services, focusing on urgent and emergency care. She conducts workforce-related research, particularly in the recruitment and retention of nurses. Joanne has worked extensively with urgent health care services such as out-of-hours general practice and NHS 111, with a keen interest in service user experiences regarding geographical and telephone access and help-seeking behaviors. Her work also explores the organization and delivery of urgent care, emphasizing the role of technology in health care delivery. Joanne's research is primarily supported by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Services and Delivery Programme, and she is an active member of the Health Workforce Systems research group. Additionally, she leads a module on qualitative research design and methods for the MRES program.
