Biography

Joao Luiz Bastos joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in March 2023. He holds a Doctorate in Epidemiology from Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil, where he completed his doctoral studies in 2010, focusing on measuring racial discrimination through large-scale epidemiologic surveys. His research interests include the health effects of racism and the impacts of interlocking systems of oppression. Dr. Bastos has developed the first-ever Brazilian scale for measuring experiences of discrimination and has conducted studies on intersectionality and health inequities across various countries, including Australia, Brazil, and the United States. He teaches on topics related to health inequities, social determinants of health, and advanced epidemiologic methods.
