João Penedones studied physics at the University of Porto, where he obtained his degree in 2002. He received a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge in 2003. He completed his PhD at the University of Porto and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 2007, with a thesis on "High Energy Scattering and AdS/CFT Correspondence". Following his doctorate, Penedones worked as a Postdoc at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Canada. From 2011 to 2016, he was a Research Fellow at the University of Porto, Portugal. In February 2016, he was appointed as a Professor of Physics at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he currently leads the Fields Strings Laboratory.
