Biography

Joao Soares holds the Campus Alberta Innovates Program (CAIP) Chair in Interfacial Polymer Engineering and specializes in oil sands processing, primarily focused on advanced polymer reaction engineering. Professor Soares has developed original methodologies to investigate polymerization processes, integrating polymerization kinetics determination, microstructural characterization, and detailed mathematical modeling. His research facilitates a comprehensive understanding of the polymerization process and polymer architecture continuum within his unique research group. Before joining the University of Alberta in July 2013, he was a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Waterloo for 18 years. He has published over 200 articles in referred journals, written 13 book chapters, and co-authored the book 'Polyolefin Reaction Engineering.' Professor Soares has also offered over 30 open and 23 in-house industrial short courses worldwide in areas of his expertise. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering and is a member of the Executive Advisory Board for Wiley-VCH Macromolecular journals, overseeing coordination in Macromolecular Reaction Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and a Professional Engineer in Ontario and Alberta.
