Joaquim Nunes Vieira studied Biochemistry as an undergraduate at the University of Lisbon, Portugal, and researched developmental angiogenesis for his PhD in Professor Christiana Ruhrberg's laboratory at University College London (UCL). He undertook successful postdoctoral studies at UCL and the University of Oxford with Professor Paul Riley, investigating the epigenetic regulation of the epicardium and the role of cardiac lymphatics during heart development and disease. Joaquim Nunes Vieira was awarded the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Intermediate Basic Science Research Fellowship to start his research group at Oxford. On January 1, he joined King’s College London as a lecturer in Cardiovascular Medicine at the School of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine and Sciences (Denmark Hill Campus), focusing his research on the molecular underpinnings of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in developing diseased hearts. His group studies cell-cell interactions in the developing heart and supports coronary lymphatic vasculature expansion and cardiac autonomic system patterning. Understanding cellular and molecular mechanisms supporting organ development provides a framework for elucidating disease mechanisms and developing new therapeutics. Dr. Joaquim Nunes Vieira was recently recognized by the American Heart Association (AHA) for his research analyzing the role of gene expression in development.
