Biography

Joaquin Vanschoren is an Associate Professor specializing in Machine Learning at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). His research aims to deeply understand, explain, and democratize AI, while building learning systems that assist humanity. Lead of the Automated Machine Learning group at TU/e, he is also the Education Director for the Data Science program. Joaquin founded OpenML, a platform dedicated to open science in machine learning, and initiated the NeurIPS Datasets Benchmarks to incentivize the evaluation of training data. He collaborates with MLCommons on AI Safety and standards, and has contributed extensively as an editor and speaker in the field, including serving as the editor-in-chief of the Journal Data-Centric Machine Learning and an action editor for JMLR. With over 200 published scientific papers and numerous accolades including the Dutch Data Prize and Amazon Research Award, he is a recognized figure in European AI networks such as ELLIS and CLAIRE. His career comprises significant research visits and keynote presentations at major conferences in Statistical Computing and Machine Learning.
