I am an associate professor in Islamic Arabic Studies at Utrecht University and the director of the Netherlands Interuniversity School Islamic Studies (NISIS). My research interests include the intellectual history of contemporary Islam and the modern Arab world, focusing on the political thinking of Islamists. I utilize Arabic primary and secondary sources and am committed to translating these works into English to make them available to a broader audience. I aim to contextualize ideologies by placing them within the broader political and socio-economic history of the ideas they have produced, transformed, and adopted. Additionally, I examine links between early Islamic history and current debates. My research is particularly concentrated on Salafism, especially Salafi ideology; the Muslim Brotherhood; issues of citizenship, women's rights, Shiites' rights in Saudi Arabia; and Hamas. Geographically, my interests lie in the modern Arab world, primarily Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Palestinian territories, where I spend time analyzing international Jihadi-Salafi discourse. In addition to my usual forthcoming publications, I am currently working on a book about Hamas.
