Biography

Jocelyn Thorpe is a scholar at the University of Manitoba, having joined in 2012 with appointments in Women's Gender Studies and History. In 2021, she became the Director of the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture. Her work includes curatorial contributions, such as co-curating the Decolonizing Lens Film Discussion Series in collaboration with Kaila Johnston and Julie Lafreniere at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Thorpe has a strong educational background, holding a PhD in Environmental Studies from York University (2008), an MA in Sociology and Equity Studies from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto (2003), and a BA with Honours in English and Critical Studies in Equity and Solidarity from the University of Toronto (2001). Her research interests focus on environmental justice and the histories and legacies of colonialism in Canada, exploring creative expressions and anti-racist feminist thought. She is a member of the Critical Environments Research Group and the organizer of the Writing World Research Cluster at the University of Manitoba. Thorpe has received multiple awards for her teaching excellence, including the Dr. Mrs. H.H. Saunderson Award in 2025 and the Students’ Teacher Recognition Award in 2021.
