Dr. Joe Abunassar completed his Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 2008, following which he undertook residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He holds a Master's of Science (MSc) in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement, awarded in 2015 by the University of Toronto, and completed a Clinical Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the University of Ottawa in 2015 and a Clinical Research Fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2016. His clinical interests include General Cardiology, Cardiac Imaging, and Interventional Cardiology. His research has been published in esteemed journals such as the American Journal of Cardiology, Canadian Journal of Cardiology, and the International Journal of Cardiology, including JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions. Dr. Abunassar joined the Department of Medicine as an Associate Professor in September 2016, where he successfully launched a percutaneous PFO closure program for patients with cryptogenic stroke and established a regional referral clinic for spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD). He is actively involved in the Interventional Cardiology Research Group at Queen's and serves as Co-Chair of the Department of Medicine Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee, coordinating clinical rotations through the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
