Joe Cartwright is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford. He has a strong focus on understanding process linkages among depositional, diagenetic, and deformational processes in sedimentary basins. His research primarily employs seismic data for various purposes and he has built laboratories at Imperial College London and Cardiff before joining Oxford. He is particularly interested in developing quantitative methods for 3D seismic interpretation to better understand processes of basin shaping and filling. Current projects he is involved in include seal integrity of hydrocarbons in carbon capture and storage (CCS), hydrocarbon migration and leakage, geological sequestration of carbon dioxide, propagation of tectonic faults, and the genesis of polygonal fault systems. He also studies the emplacement of giant dyke swarms, the genesis of mud volcanoes, and mechanisms controlling fluid overpressure in the subsurface. Additionally, his long-term research interests are centered around the formation of volcanic passive margins in the South Atlantic. He teaches courses in Structural Geology, including workshops and field courses in locations such as Pembrokeshire and Assynt.
