Joe Chakkalakal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University School of Medicine. His research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neuromuscular development, regeneration, and aging, with an emphasis on understanding stem and progenitor cell fate and function, as well as stem cell niche biology. His current studies include examining the cellular basis of restoration of neuromuscular junctions after injury and pursuing mechanisms to manipulate relevant stem and progenitor cell populations to improve neuromuscular recovery. Chakkalakal also investigates the long-term impacts of pediatric cancer therapies on neuromuscular growth and skeletal muscle health. He aims to understand how these therapies affect stem cell activity during critical periods of growth and to develop strategies to mitigate negative outcomes. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa in Canada in 2006.
