Dr. Joe Cutbirth

Biography

Joe Cutbirth is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at the Moody College of Communication, University of Texas at Austin. His research explores the intersection of media, ethics, and public narratives, particularly focusing on leadership narratives and their implications for civic participation and communication leadership. His work has been published in reputable outlets including Ethnography Matters and Media Ethics. Prior to joining the faculty at UT Austin, Cutbirth taught at prestigious institutions such as Columbia Graduate School of Journalism and New York University. With a strong background in journalism, Cutbirth has held positions such as statehouse reporter for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and editor for the Texas Observer. He also served as the communications director for the Texas Democratic Party during significant electoral campaigns. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Columbia University and a Master’s in Communication, Culture, and Technology from Georgetown University, along with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the University of Texas at Austin.
