Biography

Joe S. Devinny is the Joe S. Devinny Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1969, followed by a Master of Science in Chemistry from Oregon in 1971, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering Science from Caltech in 1975. His research focuses on biofiltration technologies, where he has conducted extensive work on devices designed to clean air by using damp porous media that support robust cultures of microorganisms for treating contaminants. His work particularly addresses challenges in air pollution control for low-concentration and high-volume discharges, including odors from wastewater treatment plants and organic vapors from manufacturing. He has significantly contributed to the academic community through various publications and has also been involved with USC's Green Visions project.
