Biography

Joe Gerlach is an Associate Professor in Cultural Geography at the University of Bristol, focusing on geophilosophy, ethics, and social theory. His academic journey began with a First Class MA and a Distinction MSc in Geography from the University of Oxford, followed by a Doctorate (DPhil) in the same field. Since joining the School of Geographical Sciences in August 2017, he has developed a strong research profile, particularly in non-representational theory, ethics, and the works of philosophers such as Spinoza and Guattari. His current research includes theorizing geophilosophical approaches to planetary crises and advancing geographical ethics. Joe is actively involved in supervising postgraduate students, particularly those interested in non-representational theory and geographies of affect. In addition to his teaching role at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, he leads field trips and directs modules focusing on philosophy and social theory in geography. He is also an Associate Editor for the Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
