Biography

Joe Harrison is a Professor specializing in Biofilm Microbiology and Genomics at the University of Calgary, where he is a CIHR Canada Research Chair (Tier II). With a B.S. in Biological Sciences (2002) and a B.S. in Molecular Biology (2003), he completed his Doctorate in Microbial Biochemistry at the University of Calgary in 2008. His research focuses on understanding surface-attached bacterial communities known as biofilms, particularly how they contribute to chronic device-associated infections and resistance to antimicrobial treatments. Harrison's work utilizes molecular genetics, genomics, and biochemistry to investigate the mechanisms by which biofilms form and maintain chronic infections, with particular emphasis on Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis patients. His long-term goal is to develop new strategies for targeting biofilms to improve treatment outcomes. Besides biofilm research, he also engages in teaching microbiology courses at the university. Harrison is recognized for his contribution to the field, having received multiple awards, including the Canadian Society of Microbiologists' Gold Medal for Graduate Student Microbiologist of the Year in 2008.
