Professor Joe Maiolo is a historian of international politics specializing in the origins of great wars, arms races, and intelligence in the twentieth century. He holds BA and MA degrees in history and philosophy from the University of Toronto. He completed his PhD in International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1996. Since joining King’s College London in September 2001, Maiolo has held appointments at the universities of Leicester and Leeds. Between 2005 and 2006, he served as a Senior Visiting Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute for Defence Studies in Oslo, and from 2014 to 2019, he was a Visiting Research Professor at the Norwegian Defence Intelligence School in Oslo. Maiolo is the editor of the Journal of Strategic Studies and a member of the editorial board for Intelligence & National Security. His research interests include 20th Century International Relations, World War History, Resource Security, and Conflicts. He is currently completing a book for Cambridge University Press on the Origins of World War I, focusing on the role of raw materials in international politics during the first half of the twentieth century.
