Biography

Joe Moore is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering program at Carnegie Mellon University. He has a diverse academic background that includes a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and French from Wabash College, a Master’s in Civil Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to his current role, Moore taught high school science through Teach for America in Chicago Public Schools. His research interests focus on active learning, climate-resilient environmental systems, engineering education, and environmental microbiology, particularly the interactions between engineered nanomaterials and bacteria. He is passionate about interdisciplinary engineering education and is dedicated to mentoring and supporting students, particularly those from marginalized communities. Moore has received the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and was recognized by the National Academy of Sciences as a Science Ambassador. He actively engages in enhancing the educational experience of his students, aiming to empower them with skills that create a positive impact in their communities. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Moore is involved in projects that transform urban environments, collaborating with local professionals to develop sustainable solutions.
