Biography

Joe Tien is an Associate Professor at Boston University College of Engineering in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He received his PhD from Harvard University, where he also earned an MA, and completed his BS at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Tien's research focuses on engineering functional tissues and controlling cellular microenvironments. He has a particular interest in the synthesis of microvascular networks to create in vitro models of microcirculatory diseases and the development of ex vivo scaffolds for tissue perfusion. His work employs techniques from molecular biology, surface chemistry, and materials science to create structured biomaterials that can enhance cellular interactions and behaviors. Dr. Tien has numerous publications and has received several awards for his contributions to the field, including the Edward C. Nagy New Investigator Award from NIH/NIBIB. He is committed to mentoring students and advancing research in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
