Joe William Trotter Jr. is the Giant Eagle University Professor of History and Social Justice at Carnegie Mellon University. He has previously served as the chair of the History Department and is the founder and director of the Carnegie Mellon Center for African American Urban Studies and Economy (CAUSE). Trotter is the President Elect of the Urban History Association and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His recent publication, 'Workers Arrival: Black Labor Making America,' was released by the University of California Press in 2019. He received his BA from Carthage College in Wisconsin and both his MA and PhD from the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on African American urban life and the Atlantic slave trade. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on various subjects including African American history, U.S. urban history, and labor history, and has participated in scholarly discussions across the United States and international forums. Trotter has served on boards and committees of numerous professional organizations, including the Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association, and has worked extensively to promote the understanding of urban history and labor issues.
