Biography

Joe Wlodarz holds a PhD from the University of Rochester and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Writing Studies at Western University. His academic focus encompasses a variety of film studies subfields, including American cinema history, international queer cinema, African-American cinema, film theory, television studies, critical race studies, feminist queer theory, genre theory, and audience/reception studies. Joe has contributed to numerous academic publications, including articles and book reviews. His selected articles have appeared in esteemed journals like Camera Obscura and Velvet Light Trap. He is also recognized for his collaborative volume 'Masculinity: Bodies, Movies, Culture,' edited by Peter Lehman. He has received several honors, including the Susan B. Anthony Institute Gender Women's Studies Dissertation Fellowship and has held a postdoctoral fellowship in English at Cornell University. Joe has served as the Chair of Programming for the ImageOut, Rochester Lesbian Gay Film Video Festival and has worked at the George Eastman House. Currently, he is working on projects such as 'Unmaking Macho: Race, Gender, Stardom in 1970s American Cinema Culture' and 'Baltimore Projects,' which explores the representation of American identity and urban culture through film and television.
