Biography

Joel Beinin is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History Emeritus at Stanford University, focusing on social and cultural history, political economy in the modern Middle East. He received his Ph.D. in History from the University of Michigan in 1982 and joined Stanford in 1983. Prior to his tenure at Stanford, he served as the Director of Middle East Studies and a Professor of History at the American University in Cairo from 2006 to 2008. In 2002, he held the position of president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America. Beinin’s research includes the political landscape of modern Egypt, Palestine, and Israel, with significant publications such as "Critical Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa" (2020), "Workers and Thieves: Labor Movements and Popular Uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt" (2015), and the 2nd edition of "Social Movements, Mobilization, and Contestation in the Middle East and North Africa" (2013). His work has appeared in prominent journals in both English and French, and he has contributed to discussions on major international media platforms including Al-Jazeera, BBC, and others.
