Biography

Professor Burdick focuses on robotics, kinematics, and mechanical systems control. He has active research areas including robotic locomotion, sensor-based motion planning algorithms, multi-fingered robotic manipulation, applied nonlinear control theory, neural prosthetics, and medical applications of robotics. With a solid academic background, he earned his B.S. from Duke University in 1981, followed by an M.S. from Stanford University in 1982, and a Ph.D. in 1988. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at Caltech from 1988 to 1994 and progressed to Associate Professor from 1994 to 2000. He has held the position of Professor in Mechanical Engineering since 2000 and in Bioengineering since 2002. Additionally, he served as Executive Officer of Bioengineering from 2006 to 2007 and has been the Hayman Professor since 2012. Since 2014, he has also worked as a Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
