Joel obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Alberta, Canada, and earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics in 2006. He completed postdoctoral training at the MacKinnon Ruta Laboratories at Rockefeller University before joining the Department of Pharmacology at Yale University in 2020. During his postdoctoral work, Joel used single-particle cryo-electron microscopy to determine the high-resolution structure of the olfactory receptor, insect Orco. At Yale, he continues to study smell and taste receptors to elucidate fundamental principles of chemosensory detection, focusing particularly on the biochemistry and biophysics underlying these processes.
