Biography

Joel Finbloom is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, specializing in Nanomedicine and Chemical Biology. With a research focus on the design of bioinspired materials that interface with microbial communities to enhance human health, Dr. Finbloom’s lab is dedicated to addressing critical challenges within pharmaceutical sciences. These challenges include the treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections and the improvement of oral delivery methods for probiotics. Finbloom began his scientific career at the NIH in 2008, gaining valuable experience under the mentorship of Dr. Kathryn Zoon at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He received his BA in Chemistry from Northwestern University in 2013, where he conducted research in the laboratory of Professor Samuel Stupp on stimuli-responsive peptide nanomaterials for cancer drug delivery. Dr. Finbloom earned his PhD in Chemistry in 2018 from the University of California, Berkeley, working with Professor Matthew Francis in fields intersecting biomaterials and chemical biology. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, under the guidance of Professor Tejal Desai, focusing on nanomaterials for antimicrobial drug delivery and regenerative medicine. Dr. Finbloom's interdisciplinary research emphasizes the importance of the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials in their interactions with biological systems to enhance biomedical applications.
