Biography

Joel Friedman is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of British Columbia. He obtained his A.B. from Harvard College in 1984 and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1987. Following his graduation, he served as an Assistant Professor at Princeton University from 1987 to 1993, and then joined UBC where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1994 and later to Professor in 2001. His research centers around algorithms, with a particular focus on graph eigenvalues and expansion connections in various fields including error-correcting codes, nonblocking networks, differential geometry, number theory, and mathematical physics. Additionally, he has experience as a Quantitative Analyst at D.E. Shaw & Co. from 1998 to 1999.
