Biography

Born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, Joel Jassu draws from personal experiences to shape his understanding, empathy, and cultural nuances in research and practice. With experience in real estate consulting focused on equitable developments, Joel recognizes the balance between community needs and development challenges. He has worked on various local and global initiatives across the United States, Uganda, South Sudan, the United Kingdom, and Tanzania, focusing on bringing cultural awareness to design. As a part-time faculty member at the College of Design, he continues to teach while engaging in research projects centered on Green Infrastructure and community development with cultural empathy. Joel has been recognized as a nominee for the Georgia Tech Alumni Association's prestigious 40 Under 40 awards for the class of 2021. His professional experiences include working on projects for Looney Ricks Kiss in Memphis, TN, and serving on the Institute Planning Design Commission at Georgia Tech as a founding partner of EightVillage. Currently, Joel serves as an Urban Design Project Manager at Perkins & Will in Atlanta, while contributing to multiple executive boards of organizations that serve vulnerable communities globally.
