Biography

Joel Koops is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He obtained his MD degree from Memorial University in 2012 and completed a 2-year residency in radiology followed by a family medicine residency with training sites in Newfoundland. His special interests include Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in primary care. Koops has been working in St. John’s since 2015 and is passionate about teaching, which was recognized when he received the Dr. Gus Rowe Clinical Teaching Award for 2022-2023. In addition to his professional commitments, he is an avid runner and enjoys outdoor activities.
