Dr. Joel Mokyr

Biography

Joel Mokyr is the Robert H. Strotz Professor of Economics at Northwestern University, specializing in economic history, particularly in Europe from 1750 to 1914. His current research focuses on the intellectual foundations of technological progress, the growth of useful knowledge in European societies, and the impact of industrialization on economic progress and welfare. He is a Fellow of several prestigious societies, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, the Cliometric Society, the British Academy, the Italian Accademia dei Lincei, and the Dutch Royal Academy. He has served as the President of the Economic History Association and as the editor-in-chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Economic History. Additionally, he co-edits a book series with Princeton University Press focused on Economic History. Mokyr was the 2006 recipient of the biennial Heineken Award for History from the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences and a winner of the 2015 Balzan International Prize for economic history. His recent publication, "Culture of Growth: The Origins of the Modern Economy," was released by Princeton University Press in 2016. He has supervised approximately forty doctoral dissertations across the Departments of Economics and History.
