Joel Wing-Lun is a Lecturer in History and Asian Studies at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). His research focuses on the social, economic, and environmental impacts of imperial expansion on communities in Southwest China from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. He is currently investigating land markets and marriage practices in Guizhou Province during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and the early Republican period. Joel holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Chinese Studies from the University of Sydney and a PhD in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University. He has been a visiting research student at Peking University, Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, and the Australian National University. In addition to his research, he served as a translator for the book 'Chinese Empire Local Society: Ming Military Institutions Legacies' published by Routledge in 2020. Joel is also affiliated with the Laureate Centre for History and Population at UNSW and is a member of the China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. In 2023, he received the Arts, Design, and Architecture Early Career Academic Network Award for Teaching Excellence.
