Joëlle Rüegg is a Professor of Environmental Toxicology at Uppsala University. She obtained her Diploma in Biochemistry from the University of Zürich (1994-1999), followed by an MSc in Neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh (1999-2000) and a PhD from Ludwig Maximilian University München (2000-2004). In 2018, she became Docent in Toxicology at Karolinska Institutet and has been a Professor at Uppsala University since 2019. Her research focuses on the effects of early life exposure to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) on human neurodevelopment, emphasizing epigenetic changes that cause long-lasting gene regulation alterations without modifying the DNA sequence itself. She leads the Molecular Toxicology Epigenetics group, which works on several projects, including an H2020-funded action with 16 participants aimed at developing novel testing methods for identifying neurodevelopment-affecting chemicals. Rüegg also collaborates on projects investigating the effects of EDCs on the human blood-brain barrier and identifying epigenetic changes linked to chemical mixtures. Her work engages multidisciplinary projects to bridge molecular mechanisms and their implications for human health in regulatory contexts.
