Biography

Joen Hermans is an Assistant Professor in Conservation Science, holding a joint position across the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam, specifically within the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences. He has an extensive background in chemistry, having obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from Utrecht University before completing his PhD at HIMS in 2017. His doctoral research focused on the chemical processes leading to metal soap formation in oil paint. From 2018 to 2022, Hermans led a project funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO/Veni), where he developed new spectroscopic methods to design model systems aimed at studying the diffusion and reactivity behavior of water within oil paint layers. Currently, he supervises five PhD candidates and collaborates with conservators and fundamental chemists at the Rijksmuseum to unravel the chemical structure of aging oil paint, with the goal of providing a scientific foundation for optimal conservation strategies in cultural heritage. He has co-authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications and continues to conduct research and educational projects in the chemistry of oil paintings.
