Joen Luirink completed his PhD thesis on the structure and function of the pCloDF13 encoded Bacteriocin Release Protein at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in 1989. Afterward, he became an associate professor in the Molecular Microbiology research group, where he developed his own research line in Molecular Cell Biology, focusing on eukaryotes. He has held various advisory roles, including a consultant position on the advisory board for Xbrane Bioscience since 2008 and Chief Scientific Officer at Abera Bioscience, a Stockholm-based biotechnology company specializing in innovative vaccine development technologies. His research interests include protein trafficking in pathogenic bacteria, the biogenesis of membrane proteins, and bacterial protein production systems for vaccine development. He is also actively involved in interdisciplinary approaches that relate to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
