Biography

Joerg Kalcsics is a Reader in the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests focus on developing exact heuristic models and algorithms to solve combinatorial optimization problems, particularly under conditions of uncertainty and reliability. He specializes in large-scale logistics challenges, including facility location, network design, sales districting, and service scheduling, with an emphasis on collaboration between companies. Theoretical aspects of his work involve the intersection of mathematics and computer science, especially combinatorial optimization, complexity theory, algorithmic design, and computational geometry. Kalcsics has contributed structural results on exact solution approaches for problems involving spatially distributed demand. He holds a Habilitation from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, a PhD from Saarland University, and a Diploma from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. He has held various academic positions in Germany and Canada, and is a board member of the EURO Working Group on Locational Analysis.
