Biography

Joern Callies is a Professor in Oceanography at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) specializing in environmental science and ocean dynamics. He focuses on the understanding of ocean circulation and its impact on climate through the analysis of satellite observations, the development of simplified dynamical models, and the execution of detailed numerical simulations. Callies received his Master’s degree from the University of Hamburg in 2011 and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015. He joined Caltech as an Assistant Professor in 2017, transitioned to Professor in 2023, and represents the Environmental Science Option in his department. His teaching includes courses on fluid dynamics in the atmosphere and ocean, where he emphasizes the underlying dynamical concepts that explain large-scale fluid circulation. His ongoing research interests encompass ocean physics, turbulent fluid laws, and practical applications to the Earth’s climate system.
